Lower School Program for Students Entering Grades K-5

The Lower School program offers a diverse selection of courses that reinforce foundational concepts and skills and offer an enriching, fun, and active learning experience for our students entering in Grades K-5.

Our Kindergarten and first grade classes are designed to instill a love of learning and build and reinforce foundational skills in a nurturing and supportive self-contained classroom setting.

Grades 2-5 have the opportunity to select classes from a variety of academic, enrichment, and recreational classes in our five-week (June 12-July 13) or two three-week sessions (June 12-June 29 or July 2-July 20). There will be no school on Wednesday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day.

Ready, set, go! Through a variety of fun, active, and hands-on learning experiences, both in and outside of the classroom, our students explore what it’s like to be a kindergartner and practice foundational skills to help make their Kindergarten experience a success! Students will learn daily routines, how to be a good friend and classmate, practice critical thinking, communication, and collaboration skills as they engage in project-based reading, writing,math, and science activities and explore the arts. Our little ones grow in confidence and independence as they discover their interests and talents. Small class sizes allow for individualized instruction.

Entering first grade students build on skills they have learned in Kindergarten through a variety of fun, active, and hands-on learning experiences, both in and out of the classroom. In this self-contained, full morning class, foundational skills are reinforced and strengthened in reading, writing and math. The curriculum is literature and theme based and centered around Common Core Standards. Science and the Engineering Design Process will also assist in articulating the developmentally appropriate post Kindergarten curriculum.

Enjoy a summer filled with adventure, exploration, and creation in this course designed to enhance the love of reading and writing, reinforce literacy skills, and explore their creative side through creative writing and drawing.This course integrates listening, speaking, reading, and writing to strengthen grade level literacy skills as students exercise their creativity as they write and illustrate their own stories. Emphasis will be on the writing process and reading for understanding. Common Core reading and writing skills/concepts are reinforced.

A math reinforcement class that will focus on strengthening and enriching the student’s grade level math skills through hands-on learning projects. Students will have the opportunity to practice computational skills, develop a deeper understanding of math concepts, and challenge their thinking through collaborative problem solving as they work on applying their math skills to a real-world project. Singapore Math and Common Core skills are incorporated.

For the Love of Music - Gr. 2-3

This course is an introduction to music. Students will explore children’s songs, folk songs, cultural songs (Hawaiian, etc.), classical and popular music appreciation. Students will learn how to play the recorder, ukulele, and sing some Hawaiian and other songs. They will learn or review note reading skills and play rhythm games.

Beginning Band - Gr. 4-5

Theater Camp - Gr. 4-5

This course explores ways to combine creative expression, collaboration and culture as they prepare to produce a final performance. Through activities, movement, and improvisational games, students will learn actors’ tools BVMI (body, voice, mind, imagination), how to create characters by analyzing CROW (character, relationship, objective, whereabouts) in a story and collaborate with peers to tell a story. These will help your child develop positive connections to others, become good observers and learn to trust their instincts and others. Students will have a performance on July 13th during the last 45 minutes of each class.

Come along on a gastronomical journey through children’s literature. This adventure should provide fun in reading, writing, math, science, social studies, art, and of course, eating. Some of the delectable delights you will encounter during this children’s literature class are burgers, spaghetti, and a few sweet treats. *Please note that peanuts and tree nuts may be used.

Ever wonder how movies like Coraline, Nightmare Before Christmas, Wallace and Gromit or Frankenweenie are made? Join us this summer for Stop Motion Mania, where students will learn to script and pre-visualize stories, build characters out of modeling clay and Sculpey, design sets, record and edit video, and do post production work on sound, music and effects. Imagination is the only limit! Enrollment is limited to 16 students.

Exercise your creativity and expand your minds by discovering the wonders of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math (STEAM). Exciting explorations, delightful discoveries and wild wonders await your child in this hands-on, minds-on class. This project-based format will encourage positive social skills, problem solving, and developing a growth mindset while exploring science, math, technology, and art concepts.. (Students may not register for the same course in the same session)

Lego Robotics Adventurers will have the chance to brainstorm, design, create, and program numerous Lego NXT creations. Students will learn the principles of gear ratios for spin art, investigate sensor-based robotics building a walking, talking (roaring, hissing, or clucking, actually) zoo animal, and challenge each other in the ever-popular Sumo Robotics Challenge. Ready, set, create!

Cooking-S.T.E.A.M. - Gr. 2-3

Hawaiian Culture & Arts - Gr. 2-5

Students will learn life skills and Hawaiian values through mele (songs), oli (chants) and other explorations in the Hawaiian culture, including the use of ‘Olelo (Hawaiian language) into the curriculum in order to enhance second-language skills and cultural awareness. This five-week course combines dance instruction with creative cultural activities to develop a strengthened sense of Hawai’i.

What is computer science? What can you do with it? Through fun activities, students will learn the basics of computer science and programming through individual, group, and online activities. We will be using MIT's Scratch to learn the basics of how to write programs in an easy and fun way.

Elemental Minds Fun With STEM: Creating the Innovators of Tomorrow Gr. 3-5

The Elemental Minds Summer STEM program will offer your child the opportunity to design and engineer fun hands-on and minds-on projects while collaborating and problem solving with others. They will test their creations in friendly competitions as they become a community of innovators. Our program will provide experiences in programming, robotics, engineering, science, and math, as well as develop 21st Century Skills, such as communication, collaboration, critical thinking, perseverance, and leadership.

Kids Martial Arts (Wushu) - Gr. 4-5

Wushu is a form of contemporary Chinese martial arts that blends elements of performance and martial application. Wushu training emphasizes quickness, explosive power, and natural, relaxed movements. Students will increase self-esteem, flexibility and balance with strength, speed with flawless technique, and discipline with focus on improved fitness. The Instructors have years of experiences and are passionate about Martial Arts.

Keiki Fun Fitness and Healthy Living

5 weeks

This course is designed to expose students to learn about fitness concepts and making healthy life choices by exposing them to a variety of physical movements. This course will include both class and daily activity sessions. Students will be exposed to building and toning muscles and improving hand-eye coordination, balance, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility and agility. Fitness workouts will be paired with FUN into each daily workout. Keiki Fitness will benefit not only those who are less active, but also those who are already well-rounded athletes by tailoring each workout to deliver measurable results and improved athletic performance for every individual.
