National Entrepreneurship Week: A Look Into Upper School Career Readiness
Elizabeth McDonnell
Since its inception in 2006, National Entrepreneurship Week has been a weeklong celebration of entrepreneurship across the country. This year, the celebration took place from February 13-20 and got us thinking about our amazing students and the entrepreneurial activities, internships, and local businesses that our Upper School students are involved in throughout the year.

In our Upper School, there are several opportunities for our students to get involved in the community, explore careers, and even build their own businesses. We offer many Upper School programs like Priory in the City, which focuses on career readiness and local internships, and Global Girls (through our Global Leadership Center), which focuses on student leaders with a global outreach.

Celebrating Our Students

Cherisse Wong ’22 is going through entrepreneurship training as a part of a Kokua Foundation grant she received earlier this year. Her project aims to reduce plastic waste at St. Andrew’s Schools and continue the school garden project with the eventual goal of enabling our school cafeteria to use fresh produce grown at school. Cherisse and her team ran a “think like an entrepreneur” workshop on Monday, February 22 to great success.

Hannah Okuda ’21, another Priory Upper School student focused on entrepreneurship for her Priory in the City project earlier this year. Okuda wants to start a business in the future, and interned with two women-owned businesses right here in Honolulu. Tardus Wealth Strategies (“Tardus”) was willing to take Hannah on as an intern and introduce her to the world of business and entrepreneurship. The Priory in the City program at SAS has helped Hannah determine her interests and secure an internship in a field she is interested in.

Location is Everything

St. Andrew’s School’s downtown location is footsteps from the seat of government, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and arts and cultural centers, as well as healthcare systems. With its personalized college and career coaching, we aim to align students’ strengths and interests with the market landscape – giving our students a big boost in career readiness, even before stepping foot in a college classroom.
