Caitlin Doughty '02: Journey from the Priory
Anela Akana
Caitlin’s journey since her years at the Priory has been an unconventional one, to say the least.

This former Kaneohe resident left her island home for the University of Chicago and a degree in medieval history. Upon graduation, Caitlin moved to California where she applied to numerous crematories in her quest to put into practice her theoretical interest in death.  Her first job was as a crematory operator followed by work as a funeral arranger and body-van transport driver.  She returned for more schooling at Cypress College where she earned a second degree in mortuary science.

Caitlin is the author of New York Times bestseller, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes: And Other Lessons from the Crematory.  She is also the energetic host of the popular (and funny!) web series, Ask a Mortician, fielding questions from dying to embalming and everything in between.  In 2011, she founded the Order of the Good Death, a non-profit advocacy group of industry professionals with the goal of bringing the discussion of death back into popular culture.

She is currently a licensed funeral director and owns her own alternative funeral home, Undertaking LA, where families can go, regardless of economic status, to mourn for their loved ones and be as involved with the funeral process as they would like to be.

Caitlin has been featured in Forbes and the LA Times and on BBC, Huffington Post, and National Public Radio.
