Beginning Strings is a particularly exciting class for students as they embark on learning a new instrument. Students choose either violin, viola, cello, or bass, and work on establishing proper posture, position, and technique. At each class, they also strive to produce a strong and resonant sound on these challenging instruments. Playing simple tunes such as "Mary Had a Little Lamb," "Jingle Bells," and "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" is fun for students in the first few months of learning. In addition to playing their instruments, students also learn to read music, a process very similar to learning a foreign language. Performing Arts, whether strings, band, or choir, is an essential part of The Priory middle school curriculum. Although music is not required in high school, many students continue with the instrument chosen in Beginning Strings, playing at a more advanced level with complex repertoire, all the way through their senior year.
